How To Make Millet Khichdi

Made with barnyard millet and split moong dal, this gluten-free dish is packed with vegetables and flavored with aromatic spices. Millet Khichdi is not only delicious but also easy to digest, making it an ideal choice for a light and healthy meal. Follow this simple recipe to enjoy a bowl of warm, satisfying khichdi that’s both nourishing and flavorful.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup barnyard millet
  • 1/2 cup split moong dal
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 medium carrot, chopped
  • 1/2 cup green peas
  • 1 medium potato, chopped
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 2 tablespoons ghee
  • Salt to taste
  • 5 cups water

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the millet and moong dal thoroughly. Soak for 10 minutes and drain.
  2. In a pressure cooker, heat ghee and add cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add asafoetida, grated ginger, and green chilies.
  3. Add chopped onions and sauté until translucent.
  4. Add carrots, potatoes, green peas, turmeric powder, and salt. Sauté for a few minutes.
  5. Add the millet and moong dal to the cooker. Mix well and add 5 cups of water.
  6. Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles until everything is cooked and soft.
  7. Serve hot with a dollop of ghee and pickle.
